Super Science in Class 2 🧪

Class 2 are really enjoying Science Week this week. We are being Scientists and are doing lots of questioning, predicting, testing, observing and discussing what we have observed.

We have used cabbage water as an indicator to find out if different liquids are acid or alkaline – if it is acid the water turns bright pink! We have found out that if we mix acidic vinegar with the alkaline – bicarbonate of soda they react and we make the gas carbon dioxide and we can see this in the bubbles that are created.

We have also found out that this gas clings to the rough outside of raisins and makes the raisins rise to the top of the container, when the raisins reached the top the bubbles burst and the raisins sank back to the bottom – it looked like the raisins were dancing. In another experiment we found that oil and water don’t mix. The oil floats on top of the water in a layer. This is because the oil is less dense than the water. But if we add some salt it drags some of the oil to the bottom of the water and when the salt dissolves the oil floats back up making an oil bubble.

Some of us have had EXCELLENT scientific ideas. All of us have had great fun with Science! 🤩
